Many of Jane’s landscape paintings are inspired by the places that lie at the extreme edges of the British Isles. The sense of being outside and walking the coastline lie at the heart of these gestural, expressive paintings.
She paints in her studio in Fife, Scotland working from sketchbooks, photographs and memory; using a range of media on gesso wooden panels and paper.
Jane likes to sketch on location and travel widely throughout the UK and beyond. She has a fascination with remote islands and she is particularly drawn to the beautiful Outer Hebrides a special place that despite the distance from the Midlands she returns to again and again.
The paintings are informed by her personal experience of walking in the landscape. Sketchbook drawings and photographs play a useful part in developing a new work. She explores the physical quality of paint allowing the gestural brush marks to suggest the light and weather of the places she has experienced.
The sense of being out in big open places lie at the heart of what she is expressing in paint.
