How to Make Beautiful Wrapping Paper Stars for Christmas

Our Blog Published on December 2, 2025

If you enjoy giving your presents a touch of personality, handmade paper stars are a charming way to use up spare wrapping paper. They look lovely hung on the tree or tucked beneath ribbon on a parcel. The method is simple, almost meditative, and creates something that feels wonderfully nostalgic.

what you will need

• Wrapping paper scraps
• Scissors
• String or thin ribbon
• Double sided sticky tape

step by step

1. cut your rectangles

Begin by cutting the wrapping paper into neat rectangles. The bigger the rectangle the bigger the star. Using leftover pieces works beautifully and gives each star its own character.

2. make the first fold

Take one end of the rectangle and fold it inwards by roughly three centimetres. Press the crease firmly so it holds its shape.

3. flip and repeat

Turn the paper over and make another fold. Continue flipping and folding until the whole strip is neatly folded in an accordion style. It should feel a little like folding a fan, something many of us remember doing at school.

4. tie the centre

Once fully folded, tie a piece of string securely around the centre. A snug knot helps the star keep its shape later on.

5. trim the ends

Use your scissors to snip each end into a simple triangle. This small cut creates the pointed ends of the finished star and gives it a crisp, decorative look.

6. shape your star

Gently fan out the folded paper. You will see the star begin to take shape. Use double sided sticky tape to join the two open ends. Press lightly to secure them and you will have a complete paper star.

7. finished

Your star is ready to use. Hang it from string, add it to a wreath or place it on a carefully wrapped gift. It is a simple craft that brings a handmade touch to your Christmas preparations.
