What Makes Whistlefish Christmas Cards So Special?
There’s something lovely about choosing Christmas cards.
You might be looking for the perfect robin for someone who loves their garden, a snowy Cornish scene that reminds you of home, or a Father Christmas you know will make the grandchildren smile.
Then there are the Christmas cards you weren’t looking for at all. You spot one and immediately think, that’s perfect for them.
That little moment is at the heart of our Christmas collection.
At Whistlefish, every Christmas card starts with an idea, a pencil, a paintbrush and plenty of imagination. But the story begins long before the finished cards find their way onto mantelpieces around the country.

Where our Christmas card designs begin
At Whistlefish, Christmas has a habit of sticking around.
While most of us are packing away the decorations in January, our in-house design team are already gathering inspiration for next Christmas.
And it tends to appear when you’re not really looking for it.
A robin outside the window. Holly growing in the garden. An unexpected flurry of snow. A Cornish harbour on a cold morning. Or memories of Christmas just gone: everyone squeezed around the table, the familiar decorations, laughter from the kitchen and someone inevitably burning their tongue on the mulled wine.
It all finds its way into our Christmas card designs.
Every design begins by hand, usually as a sketch or painting. Look closely and you can often still see the character of that original artwork: individual brushstrokes, painted textures and tiny details that make each card feel alive.
Because we’re not simply designing something to look lovely on a shelf.
We’re designing the card that makes you think, I know exactly who would love this.

From original artwork to Christmas card
Once the artwork is finished, there’s still plenty to think about.
Which paper suits it best? Are the colours just right? Does it need a touch of foil? How will the artwork feel once printed?
They might sound like small decisions, but they make all the difference.
A little foil catching the light on the mantelpiece. The richness of a painted red. The texture of an original brushstroke still visible in the finished design.
We want every Whistlefish Christmas card to keep the character of the artwork it began with, right down to those little details that made us love it in the first place.

Christmas cards inspired by Cornwall
Cornwall has been our home from the beginning, so naturally it finds its way into what we create.
Winter here has a character all of its ow n. Harbours become quieter, the evenings draw in, Christmas lights appear in towns and villages, and the Cornish coast can go from beautifully calm to wonderfully wild in the space of an afternoon.
You’ll find little pieces of that throughout our Christmas card collection, from snowy scenes and winter wildlife to festive foliage, robins and traditional Christmas designs inspired by the natural world around us.
The ideas may begin here in Cornwall, but eventually those cards make their way into homes all over the UK, each carrying a message and a story of its own.

A Christmas card chosen just for them
Of course, the artwork is only half of it.
The person you choose it for is what makes a Christmas card personal.
There are Christmas cards for Mum and Dad, grandparents, partners and lifelong friends. But there are also cards for the neighbour who always takes in your parcels, the teacher who has been brilliant this year, or the relative you haven’t seen nearly enough.
Sometimes it’s heartfelt. Sometimes it’s funny. Sometimes it’s simply a way of saying, I thought of you.
Finding the right Christmas card isn’t necessarily about choosing the fanciest one.
It’s finding the one that feels like them.

Made to become part of Christmas
For a few weeks every year, Christmas cards become part of our homes.
They slowly take over the mantelpiece, squeeze themselves between photographs on the bookshelf and hang from ribbons down the staircase. You recognise familiar handwriting before you’ve even opened the envelope and watch the collection grow as Christmas gets closer.
And every so often, when January arrives, there’s one you can’t quite bring yourself to throw away.
We rather like that.
Because a Whistlefish Christmas card might begin as a few pencil marks in a sketchbook here in Cornwall, but that isn’t where its story ends.
It ends up in someone else’s home, carrying words that could only have come from you.
This Christmas, send one more card
This year, we’d love to encourage you to do something very simple.
Send one more Christmas card.
Perhaps it’s to the friend where you’ve both decided you’re “not really Christmas card people”. Maybe it’s a relative you haven’t spoken to for a little while. The neighbour who always stops for a chat. Someone who has helped you this year. Or simply a person who makes ordinary days that little bit brighter.
Add them to the list.
Because while many of us are lucky enough to watch our mantelpieces fill with Christmas cards throughout December, not everybody gets to experience that.
Something as simple as an envelope dropping through the letterbox can mean more than we realise.
And with 15 Christmas cards for £12, there’s always room for one more.

Beautiful Christmas cards, thoughtfully made
Our Christmas cards are printed using vegetable-based inks on paper sourced from sustainably managed forests, and the finished cards are fully recyclable.
It means we can keep creating beautiful Christmas cards here in Cornwall while taking care of the landscape that inspires so much of our artwork.
From our designers’ hands to yours, and from yours to someone special.
That’s the story of a Whistlefish Christmas card.
