Craft Your Own Beautiful Flower Crown
Craft Your Own Beautiful Flower Crown: A Glastonbury-Inspired Whistlefish Guide
Dreaming of summer festivals, bohemian vibes, and dancing beneath the Cornish sun? A flower crown is the ultimate feel-good accessory. Inspired by the free-spirited charm of Glastonbury and the natural magic of Cornwall, this Whistlefish guide will show you how to create your very own floral headpiece. Perfect for festival season, summer weddings, or simply embracing that joyful, creative energy.
Materials you’ll need for your festival crown:
- Real Flowers – Forage responsibly for wild blooms, or choose vibrant stems that reflect your personality. Think daisies, lavender, wildflowers, or even fragrant herbs.
- Thick Floral Wire – This will form the sturdy base of your crown.
- Thin Floral Wire – For delicately securing your floral clusters.
- Jute Twine – Wraps beautifully around the base to soften the wire and give an earthy, rustic look.
- Ribbon – For fastening your crown. A flowing, colourful ribbon adds a touch of flair.
- Wire Cutters – Essential for snipping both thick and thin wire.
- Flower Cutters or Sharp Scissors – For trimming stems neatly and with precision.

Step-by-Step: How to Make Your Flower Crown
1. Measure and Cut Your Base
Wrap your thick floral wire gently around your head to find the right fit. Leave around 10cm (4 inches) extra on each end before cutting — these ends will form the loops for tying the ribbon.
2. Form Your Ribbon Loops
Twist the extra lengths at each end into neat, secure loops. These will be used later to thread your ribbon through.
3. Wrap with Twine
Take your jute twine and wrap it tightly around the entire wire base. This softens the crown for comfortable wear and adds that warm, handmade touch.
4. Prepare to Attach Flowers
Secure one end of your thin floral wire to one of the ribbon loops. Leave the rest of the wire free and ready for attaching your floral bunches.
5. Create Flower Bunches
Gather small clusters of flowers and greenery. Whether you want a bold crown or something more delicate, trim the stems to around 5–7cm (2–3 inches) to keep them manageable.
6. Attach Your Blooms
Place your first bunch along the crown and use the thin wire to wrap around the stems, binding them firmly to the twine-covered base. Work neatly, securing each bunch well.
7. Continue Around the Crown
Repeat, overlapping each bunch slightly with the one before it. Make sure all blooms face the same direction for a flowing, seamless effect.
8. Fill Any Gaps
Check your crown for any bare spots. Fill them with smaller flowers or greenery until you have a full, balanced look.
9. Thread the Ribbon and Wear
Thread your ribbon through the loops at either end and tie it in a soft bow. Place the crown on your head, adjust as needed, and enjoy!
A Quick Safety Note
Floral wire can be sharp – take care while working, and consider wearing lightweight gloves if you're worried about pricking your fingers.
